[[രാവണൻ|രാവണന്റെ]] ഇളയ സഹോദരനായിരുന്നു ഇദ്ദേഹം. അസുര രാജാവായ രാവണന്റെ സഹോദരനായിട്ടൂം, വിഭീഷണൻ വളരെ സൌമ്യസ്വഭാവമുള്ള ഒരു ശ്രേഷ്ഠനായിരുന്നു. രാവണൻ [[സീത|സീതയെ]] തട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടുപോന്നപ്പോൾ അദ്ദേഹം സീതയെ [[ശ്രീരാമൻ|രാ‍മന്]] വിട്ടുകൊടുക്കണമെന്ന് അഭ്യർഥിക്കുകയും, പിന്നീട് ഇത് കേൾക്കാതെ വന്നത് കൊണ്ട്, രാമ രാവണ യുദ്ധസമയത്ത് വിഭീഷണൻ രാമ പക്ഷത്ത് ചേരുകയും ചെയ്തു.
