പോക്കാഹോണ്ടാസ്
പോക്കാഹോണ്ടാസ് (ജനന നാമം : മറ്റൊവാക്ക, അമൊന്യൂട്ട് എന്ന പേരിലും അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു) (ജീവിതകാലം: c. 1596–1617) ഒരു തദ്ദേശീയ അമേരിക്കൻ ഇന്ത്യൻ വനിതയായിരുന്നു.[2][3][4] വിർജീനിയയിലെ ജയിംസ്ടൌൺ ആദ്യകാല കുടിയേറ്റക്കാരുമായുള്ള അവരുടെ സഹകരണം പ്രസിദ്ധമാണ്. ഗോത്രവർഗ്ഗക്കാരുടെ വിവിധ രാഷ്ട്രങ്ങളുടെ കൂട്ടായ്മയുടെ പരമോന്നത ചീഫായ പോവ്ഹാട്ടൻറെ[5] മകളായിരുന്നു. വിർജീനിയയിലെ വേലിയേറ്റമേഖലയിലുള്ള പ്രദേശത്തായിരുന്നു ഇവർ അധിവസിച്ചിരുന്നത്.

ഒരു അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ചരിത്ര ഐതിഹ്യപ്രകാരം 1607 ൽ അമേരിക്കൻ ഇന്ത്യൻ വർഗ്ഗക്കാരുടെ തടവുകാരനായിരുന്ന ജോൺ സ്മിത്ത് എന്ന ഇംഗ്ലീഷുകാരനെ ഇന്ത്യൻ ചീഫ് വധശിക്ഷയ്ക്കു വിധിക്കുകയും വിധി നടപ്പിലാക്കുന്ന സമയത്ത് പോക്കാഹോണ്ടാസ് എന്ന ചീഫിൻറെ മകൾ ജോൺ സ്മിത്തിൻറെ തലയ്ക്കു മുകളിൽ തൻറെ തല വച്ച് പിതാവ് ശിക്ഷ നടപ്പാക്കുന്നത് തടസ്സപ്പെടുത്തി അദ്ദേഹത്തെ രക്ഷപ്പെടുത്തുകയും ചെയ്തുവെന്നാണ്. എന്നാൽ ചില ചരിത്രകാരന്മാർ ജോൺ സ്മിത്ത് രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയ ഈ കഥ അസത്യമാണെന്നും സൂചിപ്പിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി.[6]
