1851-ൽ ഇല്ലിനോയി ജനറൽ അസംബ്ലി ചാർട്ടേഡ് ചെയ്ത, നോർത്ത് വെസ്റ്റേൺ യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി മുൻകാലത്തെ നോർത്ത് വെസ്റ്റ് ടെറിട്ടറിയുടെ സേവനത്തിനായി സ്ഥാപിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. മെത്തഡിസ്റ്റ് എപ്പിസ്‌കോപ്പൽ സഭയുമായി ആദ്യകാലത്ത് അഫിലിയേറ്റ് ചെയ്‌തിരുന്ന സർവ്വകലാശാല പിന്നീട് വിഭാഗീയതയില്ലാത്തതായി മാറി. 1900-ഓടെ, അമേരിക്കൻ ഐക്യനാടുകളിലെ മൂന്നാമത്തെ വലിയ സർവ്വകലാശാലയായിരുന്നു ഇത്.[11] 1896-ൽ, ബിഗ് ടെൻ കോൺഫറൻസിന്റെ[12] സ്ഥാപക അംഗമായിത്തീരുന്ന ഇത് 1917-ൽ അമേരിക്കൻ സർവ്വകലാശാലകളുടെ ആദ്യകാല അംഗമായി അസോസിയേഷനിൽ ചേർന്നു.
