സൈനിക മേധാവിയെ തടങ്കലിലാക്കിയ ശേഷമായിരുന്നു ഒരു വിഭാഗം അധികാരം പിടിച്ചെടുക്കാൻ ശ്രമം നടത്തിയത്. അങ്കാറയിലും ഇസ്താംബുളിലും കടന്ന സൈന്യം വിമാനത്താവളത്തിന്റേയും പ്രധാനറോഡുകളുടേയും നിയന്ത്രണം ഏറ്റെടുക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. സൈനിക വാഹനങ്ങളിലായി എത്തിയ സൈന്യം പ്രസിഡന്റിന്റെ കൊട്ടാരവളപ്പിൽ ബോംബിടുകയും, സൈന്യത്തിനെതിരെ അണിനിരന്ന ജനങ്ങൾക്ക് നേരെ വെടിവെക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ആയിരത്തോളം പേർക്കാണ് ബോംബേറിലും വെടിവെയ്പിലുമായി പരിക്കേറ്റത്

ആയിരത്തോളം പേർക്കാണ് ബോംബേറിലും വെടിവെയ്പിലുമായി പരിക്കേറ്റത് തുർക്കിയിൽ പട്ടാള അട്ടിമറിശ്രമം നടന്നതിനു ശേഷം 81,000 പേരെ ജോലിയിൽ നിന്ന് സസ്‌പെൻഡ് ചെയ്യുകയോ പുറത്താക്കുകയോ ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. പുറത്താക്കിയവരിൽ 3000ഓളം പേർ സൈനികരോ ജഡ്ജിമാരോ സർക്കാർജീവനക്കാരോ ആണ്.^[34]
