തായിൽ ജോൺ ചെറിയാൻ

ഇന്ത്യയിലെ കേരളത്തിൽ നിന്നുള്ള മലയാളി കാർഡിയോ തൊറാസിക് സർജനായിരുന്നു ടിജെസി എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന തായിൽ ജോൺ ചെറിയാൻ. സാമൂഹ്യ പ്രതിബദ്ധതയ്ക്കും അനുകമ്പാപൂർവമായ സമീപനത്തിനും പേരുകേട്ട വ്യക്തിത്വമായിരുന്നു. 1972 ൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് പദ്മശ്രീ നൽകി, പിന്നീട് 1992 ൽ, വൈദ്യശാസ്ത്രരംഗത്തെ സേവനങ്ങൾക്ക് ഏറ്റവും ഉയർന്ന മൂന്നാമത്തെ സിവിലിയൻ അവാർഡായ പത്മഭൂഷൺ നൽകി ഇന്ത്യൻ സർക്കാർ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ആദരിച്ചു. 1920 ഓഗസ്റ്റ് 2 ന് തായിൽ കുടുംബത്തിൽ, ജോൺ, എലിസബത്ത് എന്നിവരുടെ മകനായി, കൊട്ടാരക്കരയിൽ, തായിൽ ജോൺ ചെറിയാൻ ജനിച്ചു. [2][3][4] ചെന്നൈയിലെ മദ്രാസ് ക്രിസ്ത്യൻ കോളേജ് സ്കൂളിൽ നിന്ന് സ്കൂൾ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം പൂർത്തിയാക്കിയ അദ്ദേഹം മദ്രാസ് ക്രിസ്ത്യൻ കോളേജിൽ കോളേജ് പഠനം നടത്തി. മെഡിക്കൽ ജീവിതം തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്ത് 1959 ൽ മദ്രാസ് മെഡിക്കൽ കോളേജിൽ ചേർന്ന് എം‌ബി‌ബി‌എസ് നേടി. 1963 ൽ കാർഡിയോ-വാസ്കുലർ സർജറിയിൽ വൈദഗ്ധ്യം നേടുന്നതിന് അദ്ദേഹം ഓസ്‌ട്രേലിയയിലെ ന്യൂ സൗത്ത് വെയിൽസിൽ പോയി റെസിഡൻസി പൂർത്തിയാക്കി മെഡിക്കൽ പ്രാക്ടീഷണറായി രജിസ്റ്റർ ചെയ്തു. [5] ജനറൽ മെഡിസിനിൽ എംഡി നേടുന്നതിനായി കാനഡയിലെത്തി, അമേരിക്കൻ കോളേജ് ഓഫ് സർജന്റെ ഫെലോ ആയി .

ഇന്ത്യൻ റെയിൽ‌വേയിൽ ഒരു മെഡിക്കൽ ഓഫീസറായി തായിൽ ജോൺ ചെറിയാൻ സേവനമാരംഭിച്ചു. [6] വിരമിക്കുന്ന സമയത്ത് സതേൺ റെയിൽ‌വേയുടെ ചീഫ് മെഡിക്കൽ ഓഫീസറായിരുന്നു. തുടർന്ന്, ചെന്നൈയിലെ വിജയ ഹോസ്പിറ്റൽ, [7] ] പിന്നീട് ദേവകി ആശുപത്രി എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ സേവനം ചെയ്തു. [8] മരണസമയത്ത് കല്ലിയപ്പ ആശുപത്രിയിൽ [9] പ്രാക്ടീസ് ചെയ്യുകയായിരുന്നു. [10] [11]

രോഗി മോശം പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിൽ നിന്നാണെന്ന് കണ്ടെത്തിയാൽ തായിൽ ഡോക്ടറുടെ ഫീസ് നിരസിക്കുമെന്നാണ് റിപ്പോർട്ട്. രോഗികളുമായി വ്യക്തിപരമായ ബന്ധം പുലർത്തുന്ന പഴയ സ്കൂൾ മെഡിക്കൽ ഡോക്ടർമാരിൽ ഒരാളായി അദ്ദേഹത്തെ പലരും ഓർക്കുന്നു. [4] [5]

അവിവാഹിതനായിരുന്ന തായിൽ ജോൺ ചെറിയാൻ 2006 മാർച്ച് 6 ന് 85 ആം വയസ്സിൽ ചെന്നൈയിൽ വച്ച് അന്തരിച്ചു. തന്റെ അപ്പാർട്ട്മെന്റ് കെട്ടിടത്തിന്റെ ടെറസിൽ നിന്ന് വീണതിനെ തുടർന്നാണ് മരണം. പരിക്കേറ്റു. അടുത്ത ദിവസം ചെന്നൈ സെന്റ് ജോർജ്ജ് കത്തീഡ്രൽ സെമിത്തേരിയിൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ സംസ്കരിച്ചു. [4] [13]
