ഇറ്റാലിയൻ വംശജയായ[1][2] ഡി മറ്റെയോ ന്യൂയോർക്കിലെ ക്യൂൻസിലുള്ള വൈറ്റ്സ്റ്റോണിലാണ് ജനിച്ചത്. ഒരു നാടകകൃത്തും നാടകമെഴുത്തിൽ പരിശീലനം നൽകുന്ന അധ്യാപികയായിരുന്ന മാതാവ് ഡോണ്. പിതാവ് ആൽബർട്ട് ഒരു ഗൃഹോപകരണ നിർമ്മാതാവും അവെരിബോർഡ്മാൻ ആന്റ് കാർലൈൽ എന്ന സ്ഥാപനത്തിന്റെ ഉടമയും സിഇഒയുമായിരുന്നു.[3][4] ഒരു റോമൻ കത്തോലിക്ക കുടുംബത്തിലാണ് അവർ വളർന്നത്.[5][6]
