ഡെർന അണക്കെട്ട് തകർച്ച
ഡാനിയൽ കൊടുങ്കാറ്റിനെ തുടർന്ന് 2023 സെപ്തംബർ 10-11 രാത്രിയിൽ ലിബിയയിലെ ഡെർന നഗരത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്തിരുന്ന രണ്ട് അണക്കെട്ടുകളുടെ വിനാശകരമായ തകർച്ചയാണ് ഡെർന അണക്കെട്ട് തകർച്ച എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. ശക്തമായ ജലപ്രവാഹത്തിൽ അണക്കെട്ടുകൾ ഒന്നൊന്നായി തകർത്തതോടെ ഏകദേശം 30 ദശലക്ഷം ക്യുബിക് മീറ്റർ (39 ദശലക്ഷം ക്യുബിക് യാർഡ്)[1] ജലം കുത്തിയൊഴുകുകയും, വാദി ഡെർനയുടെ തീരപ്രദേശങ്ങൾ കവിഞ്ഞൊഴുകിയതോടെ താഴെയുള്ള പ്രദേശങ്ങൾ പ്രളയ ബാധിതമാകുകയും ചെയ്തു.[2][3] പ്രളയം ഡെർന നഗരത്തെ ഭാഗികമായി തകർത്തു തരിപ്പണമാക്കി. സെപ്തംബർ 18-ലെ കണക്കനുസരിച്ച്, 5,300 മുതൽ 20,000 വരെ ആളുകളാണ് ഈ പ്രളയത്തിൽ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടത്.[4] 1975-ൽ ചൈനയിലെ ബാൻക്യാവോ അണക്കെട്ടിന്റെ തകർച്ചയ്ക്ക് ശേഷം ചരിത്രത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും മാരകമായ രണ്ടാമത്തെ അണക്കെട്ട് പരാജയമായിരുന്നു ഈ സംഭവം.

1973 മുതൽ 1977 വരെയുള്ള കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ ഹൈഡ്രോടെക്നിക-ഹൈഡ്രോ എനർജറ്റിക[5] എന്ന യുഗോസ്ലാവിയൻ കമ്പനിയാണ് ഈ അണക്കെട്ടുകൾ കൃഷിയിടങ്ങളിൽ വെള്ളപ്പൊക്കം നിയന്ത്രിക്കുന്നതിനും[6] സമീപ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലെ സമൂഹങ്ങൾക്ക് കുടിവെള്ളം പ്രദാനം ചെയ്യുന്നതിനുമായി നിർമ്മിച്ചത്. 75 മീറ്ററും (മൻസൂർ അണക്കെട്ട്) 45 മീറ്ററും (ഡെർന അണക്കെട്ട്) ഉയരങ്ങളിൽ കളിമണ്ണ് നിറഞ്ഞ എംബാങ്ക്മെന്റ് ഡാം എന്നാണ് അവ വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നത്.[7] ഡെർന (അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ബെലാഡ്)[8] അണക്കെട്ടിന് 1.5 ദശലക്ഷം ക്യുബിക് മീറ്റർ ജലസംഭരണ ശേഷിയുണ്ടായിരുന്നപ്പോൾ മൻസൂർ (അഥവാ അബു മൻസൂർ[9]) അണക്കെട്ടിന് 22.5 ദശലക്ഷം ക്യുബിക് മീറ്റർ[10] (മറ്റൊരു സ്രോതസ്സിൽ 1.5 ദശലക്ഷം ക്യുബിക് മീറ്റർ[11]) ജലസംഭരണ ശേഷിയാണുണ്ടായിരുന്നത്.
