ജോയ്‌സി കിൽമർ

ജോയ്‌സി കിൽമർ(ആൽഫ്രഡ്‌ ജോയ്‌സി കിൽമർ, ഡിസംബർ 6, 1886-ജൂലൈ 30, 1918) അമേരിക്കൻ കവിയും പത്രപ്രവർത്തകനുമായിരുന്നു. ട്രീസ്‌(Trees മരങ്ങൾ) എന്ന ഒറ്റ കവിതയിലൂടെയാണ്‌ കിൽമർ പ്രശസ്തനായിത്തീർന്നത്‌. ഈ കവിതയുടെ സംഗീത രൂപം 1940കളിലും 50കളിലും ജനകീയമായിരുന്നു. അമേരിക്കയിലെ ന്യൂജേഴ്സി സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ ന്യൂബേൺസ്വിക്കിലാണ്‌ കിൽമർ ജനിച്ചത്‌. രണ്ടാം ലോകമഹായുദ്ധകാലത്തെ സൈനിക സേവനത്തിനിടയിൽ ഫ്രാൻസിൽ വച്ച്‌ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടു. ട്രീസ്‌ എന്ന കവിതയിലെ അവസാന രണ്ടുവരികൾ മാത്രം മതി, ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രതിഭയെ മനസ്സിലാക്കാം. ആ കവിത താഴെച്ചേർക്കുന്നു.

"Trees"

I think that I shall never see

A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest

Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,

And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in summer wear

A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;

Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,

But only God can make a tree.
