ചെഞ്ച ഡേവിസ്

ഒരു സിങ്കപ്പൂർ വംശജയായ ഇന്ത്യൻ ശിശുരോഗ പ്രവർത്തകയും വനിതാവകാശ പ്രവർത്തകയുമാണ്‌ ചെഞ്ച ഡേവിസ് (മിസ്സിസ് ഇ. വി. ഡേവിസ് 1898-1979). ചെറുപ്പത്തിൽ, അവൾ ഒരു അധ്യാപികയായിരുന്നു. എന്നാൽ സിംഗപ്പൂരിലേക്ക് നീങ്ങിയതിനുശേഷം, രണ്ടു വ്യത്യസ്ത അവസരങ്ങളിൽ, ക്രിസ്തീയ, സാമൂഹ്യ സേവന സംഘടനകളിൽ സജീവമായിരുന്നു. അവർ വൈ.എം.സി.എ.യുടെ പ്രസിഡന്റായി സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. 1970 ൽ ചെഞ്ച ഡേവിസിന് പബ്ലിക് സർവീസ് സ്റ്റാർ ലഭിക്കുകയും സിംഗപ്പൂർ വുമൺസ് ഹാൾ ഓഫ് ഫെയിമിൽ അവരെ ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഭരണകാലത്ത് വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം നിർവ്വഹിച്ച അവർ മദ്രാസിലെ വിദ്യാലയത്തിലാണു പഠിച്ചത്.

മുൻകാല ജീവിതം

1898-ൽ കേരളത്തിൽ ടി. ഡി. ജോർജിന്റെ പുത്രിയായി ചെഞ്ച ഡേവിസ് ജനിച്ചു. ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഭരണകാലത്ത് മദ്രാസിൽ പഠിച്ചു. സാമ്പത്തികശാസ്ത്രത്തിലും ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് ചരിത്രത്തിലും ബിരുദവും ബിരുദാനന്തര ബിരുദവും നേടി. വിവാഹ ശേഷം സിംഗപ്പൂരിലേക്ക് പോയി. 1916 ൽ വൈ.ഡബ്ല്യു.എ.സി.എ അസോസിയേഷനിൽ ചേർന്ന അവർ, സ്ത്രീകളുടെയും പെൺകുട്ടികളുടെയും വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ അവസരങ്ങൾ മെച്ചപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതിന് ദൗത്യത്തിൽ ഏർപ്പെട്ടു. മെതൊഡിസ്റ്റ് ചർച്ചിൽ ഒരു പ്രസംഗകയായി ജോലി നോക്കിയിരുന്നു . .
