ഇറാനിലെ ഇസ്‌ലാമിക വിപ്ലവം നടന്ന ശേഷം വിദ്യാർഥികൾ തടവിലാക്കിയ അമേരിക്കൻ ബന്ദികളെ രക്ഷപ്പെടുത്താൻ അമേരിക്ക നടത്തിയ രക്ഷാപ്രവർത്തനമായിരുന്നു ഓപറേഷൻ ഈഗിൾ ക്ലോ (പരുന്തിന്റെ നഖം). രണ്ടു കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളിലായി ഹെലിക്കൊപ്പ്ട്ടരുകൾ ഇറക്കി മിന്നൽ ഓപ്പറേഷനിലൂടെ ബന്ധികളെ മോചിപ്പിക്കാനായിരുന്നു പദ്ധതി. എന്നാൽ ഓപ്പറേഷൻ സമയത്ത് ഹെലിക്കൊപ്പ്റ്ററുകൾ മണൽ കാറ്റിൽ പെട്ട് തകർന്നു ഈ പദ്ധതി വൻ പരാജയത്തിൽ കലാശിച്ചു.
