LATHA LEKSHMI (MALAYALAM WRITER)

Latha lekshmi, a significant writer in malayalam literature.Showed her excellence in both poetry and fiction from an early age.Was born in Trippunittura in Eranakulam district. Her father Memanakotte Unnikrishna Menon, a Kathikan, was known as “Melodious” Unnikrishnan. Her mother was Maheswari Menon of the Ettuthaikkal family of Madappalil.Was educated at the SNDP High School, Udayamperur, St Joseph Convent, Thrippunithura and NSS College. Is currently a teacher at Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, Eranakulam.

First attracted attention with the story “Madhaye Ingane Kaanumneratte”, a story published in ‘Kala Kaumudi’. This story which is based on Kumaran Asan’s “Karuna” has great lyrical beauty. The story offered a fresh interpretation of the relationship between Upaguptan and Vasavadatta. “Smasanathinte Sanjayam” is an excellent satire on rich upper class woman who turn to writing for want of anything better to do. “Dhayanaparvam” reassesses the character of Hidimbi of the “Mahabharata”. “Silika” deals with organ donation. In “Dolphin Chirikkunnu” she tells the story of a young woman who does not know how to suckle her own child. Sreelekshmi’s stories have presented the tribulations of contemporary life.
