ബ്യൂബോണിക് പ്ലേഗ് എന്ന അസുഖം മൂലമുണ്ടായ ചരിത്രത്തിലെ ആദ്യ പകർച്ചവ്യാധി ആയിരുന്നു ജസ്റ്റീനിയൻ പ്ലേഗ് (Plague of Justinian) (541–542 എഡി). ബൈസന്റൈൻ സാമ്രാജ്യത്തെയായിരുന്നുപാൻഡെമിക് ബാധിച്ചത്. കോൺസ്റ്റാന്റിനോപ്പിൾ എന്ന സാമ്രാജ്യതലസ്ഥാനവും രോഗത്തിനിരയായി. ലോകത്തിൽ ഇതുവരെ ഉണ്ടായിട്ടുള്ളതിൽ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ പ്ലേഗ് ബാധകളിലൊന്നാണ് ഇതെന്ന് കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.

ബ്യൂബോണിക് പ്ലേഗ് ആയിരുന്നു ഈ അസുഖമെന്ന് പൊതുവിൽ അംഗീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്.[4] ഇത് ബ്യൂബോണിക് പ്ലേഗ് ആയിരുന്നുവെങ്കിൽ തന്നെ മദ്ധ്യകാലഘട്ടത്തിലും സമീപകാലത്തുമുണ്ടായ പ്ലേഗ് രോഗത്തിൽ നിന്ന് വളരെ വ്യത്യാസമുള്ള തരം അസുഖമായിരുന്നു എന്നാണ് പുതിയ ഗവേഷണങ്ങൾ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. [5]

മദ്ധ്യ ഏഷ്യ, ദക്ഷിണേഷ്യ, വടക്കൻ ആഫ്രിക്ക, അറേബ്യ എന്നിവിടങ്ങളെയും യൂറോപ്പിനെയും അസുഖം ബാധിച്ചുവെന്ന് ചരിത്രകാരന്മാർ അവകാശപ്പെടുന്നു. ചൈനയായിരുന്നു അസുഖത്തിന്റെ പ്രഭവസ്ഥാനം എന്ന് ജനിതക പരീക്ഷണങ്ങൾ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. [6]
