പത്തൊൻപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലെ പ്രമുഖനായ ഫ്രഞ്ച് പെയിന്ററും റിയലിസ്റ്റ് ശൈലിയുടെ മുഖ്യ വക്താവുമായിരുന്നു ഗുസ്താവ് കൂർബെ (ജനനം:10 ജൂൺ 1819 – 31 ഡിസം:1877). ചിത്രകലയിൽ നവീനമായ സാമുഹ്യ വിമർശം കൂർബെ ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തിയത് അന്ന് ശ്രദ്ധേയമായ സംഗതിയായിരുന്നു. നെതർലൻഡ്സിലേയ്ക്കും ബൽജിയത്തിലേയ്ക്കും കൂർബെ നടത്തിയ യാത്രകൾ ചുറ്റുമുള്ള ലോകത്തെ കലയിൽ ആവാഹിയ്ക്കുന്നതിനു കൂർബെയ്ക്കു പ്രചോദനമേൽകി.
