ആഗ്ലോ-സാക്സൊൺ മഹാകാവ്യമായ ബിയവൂൾഫ്“(AD 700-1000)ലെ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട മൂന്ന് വില്ലന്മാരിൽ ഒരാളാണ്‌ ഗ്രെൻഡൽ.ഗ്രൻഡലിന്റെ അമ്മായിയും ഡ്രാഗണുമാണ്‌ മറ്റ് രണ്ട് വില്ലന്മാർ.ഗ്രൻഡൽ മോൺസ്റ്ററോ രാക്ഷസനോ ആണ്‌.ഈ കാര്യം ഇന്നും പണ്ഡിതർക്ക് തർക്ക വിഷയമാണ്‌.

കഥ

ഷിൽഡിന്റെ പേരക്കിടാവ് ഹീൽഫ്ഡേനിന്റെ മകനായിരുന്നു ഹ്രോത്‌ഗാർ ജനങ്ങൾക്ക് പ്രിയപ്പെട്ടവനും യുദ്ധവീരനുമായിരുന്നു. ദീർഘകാലത്തെ ഭരണത്തിനു ശേഷം, പ്രതാപിയായ അദ്ദേഹം തന്റേയും പരിജനങ്ങളുടേയും ഉല്ലാസത്തിനായി ഹിയൊറോട്ട് എന്ന മനോഹരമായ ഉത്സവശാല നിർമ്മിച്ചു. അവിടെനിന്നുയർന്ന സംഗീതവും ആർപ്പുവിളികളും അടുത്തുള്ള ഒരു ചളിപ്പൊയ്കയിൽ താമസിച്ചിരുന്ന ഗ്രെൻഡൽ എന്ന സത്വത്തെ കോപിഷ്ടനും അസൂയാലുവുമാക്കി. ഒരു രാത്രി ഉത്സവശാലയിലെത്തിയ ഗ്രെൻഡൽ ഹ്രോത്ഗാറിന്റെ മുപ്പത് യോദ്ധാക്കളെ കൊന്നൊടുക്കി. അടുത്ത പന്ത്രണ്ട് വർഷം ഉത്സവശാലക്കുനേരെയുള്ള ആക്രമണം തുടർന്ന അയാൾ ഹ്രോത്ഗാറിനെ പൊറുതുമുട്ടിച്ചു.

സ്വീഡനിലെ ഗീറ്റുകളുടെ വീരന്മാരിൽ പ്രമുഖനായിരുന്ന ബെയൊവുൾഫ് ഗ്രെൻഡലിന്റെ അതിക്രമങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ചറിഞ്ഞ് ഹ്രോത്ഗാറിന്റെ രക്ഷക്കെത്താൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചു. പതിനാല് അനുയായികൾക്കൊപ്പം ഒരു കപ്പലിൽ ഡെന്മാർക്കിലെത്തിയ അയാളെ ഹ്രോത്ഗാർ സ്വീകരിച്ച് നന്ദിപൂർവം സൽക്കരിച്ചു. അന്നുരാത്രി ബെയൊവുൾഫ് അനുയായികൾക്കൊപ്പം ഉത്സവശാലയിൽ ഗ്രെൻഡലിനെ കാത്തുകിടന്നു. ആയുധങ്ങളൊന്നുമില്ലാതെ വന്ന ഗ്രെൻഡലിനെ ബെയൊവുൾഫ് നിരായുധനായിത്തന്നെ നേരിട്ടു. ഏറ്റുമുട്ടലിനിടെ ഗ്രെൻഡലിന്റെ ഒരു കയ്യിൽ പിടിമുറുക്കിയ ബെയൊവുൾഫ് പിടിവിട്ടില്ല. മല്പ്പിടിത്തത്തിൽ ബെയൊവുൾഫ് ആ കൈ പറിച്ചെടുത്തു. അങ്ങനെ മാരകമായി മുടിവേറ്റ ഗ്രെൻഡൽ ചളിപ്പൊയ്കയിലെ തന്റെ താവളത്തിലെത്തി മരിച്ചു.
