അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ജീവിതദശയിൽ ലോകത്ത് പോർച്ചുഗീസ് സംസാരിക്കുന്ന പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ ഏറ്റവും മഹാനായ ഗോവക്കാരൻ എന്നാണ് അദ്ദേഹം അറിയപെട്ടിരുന്നത് ("O Maior de todos" ("The Greatest of all [Goans]")),[2] ഇന്ത്യയിൽ ഗോവയുടെ തിലകമെന്നും.[3]
