This template is put at the top of a biographical article to point out to readers where one element of a person's Indian name is not the family name but a patronymic, that is, the given name of his or her father.

If the subject of the biographical article is named "Shunmugam Jayakumar", where "Jayakumar" is his personal name and "Shunmugam" the name of his father, the template should be set out like this:

The result is as follows:
- In this Indian name, the name "Shunmugam" is a patronymic, not a family name, and the person should be referred to by the given name, "Jayakumar". The abbreviations "s/o" or "d/o", if used, mean "son of" or "daughter of" respectively.
