1973-ൽ രാജാവായിരുന്ന സഹീർ ഷായെ അധികാരത്തിൽ നിന്നും പുറത്താക്കി, മുഹമ്മദ് ദാവൂദ് ഖാൻ അഫ്ഗാനിസ്താനിൽ സ്ഥാപിച്ച ഭരണകൂടമാണ് റിപ്പബ്ലിക് ഓഫ് അഫ്ഗാനിസ്താൻ. 1973 ജൂലൈ 17-ന് നടന്ന ഈ അട്ടിമറിയോടുകൂടി അഫ്ഗാനിസ്താനിലെ രാജഭരണം അവസാനിച്ചു. ദാവൂദ് ഖാൻ രാജ്യത്തെ ആദ്യത്തെ പ്രസിഡണ്ടാകുകയും ചെയ്തു. അഫ്ഗാനിസ്താനിലെ കമ്മ്യൂണിസ്റ്റ് കക്ഷിയായിരുന്ന പി.ഡി.പി.എ.യുടെ പിന്തുണയോടെയാണ് ദാവൂദ് ഖാൻ അട്ടിമറി നടത്തിയത്. എന്നാൽ പിൽക്കാലത്ത് കമ്യൂണിസ്റ്റുകളുമായി എതിർപ്പിലായതിനെത്തുടർന്ന് 1978-ലെ സോർ വിപ്ലവത്തിൽ കമ്യൂണീസ്റ്റുകൾ ദാവൂദ് ഖാനെ വധിച്ച് അധികാരം പിടിച്ചെടുത്തു.
