ആദ്യത്തെ ഉന്നത തല കമ്പ്യൂട്ടര്‍ ഭാഷയായ [[ഫോര്‍ട്രാന്‍ ]]വികസിപ്പിച്ച [[ഐ.ബി.എം.]] സംഘത്തിന്റെ തലവനായിരുന്നു '''ജോണ്‍ വാര്‍ണര്‍ ബാക്കസ്''' (ജനനം: [[ഡിസംബര്‍ 3]] 1924 മരണം [[മാര്‍ച്ച് 17]] 2007). IBM 704 കമ്പ്യൂട്ടറിന് വേണ്ടിയാണ് ബാക്കസും സംഘവും ഫോര്‍ട്രാന്‍ വികസിപ്പിച്ചത്. കമ്പ്യൂട്ടറുകള്‍ക്ക് ശാസ്ത്ര ഗവേഷണ രംഗത്ത് പ്രധാന്യമുണ്ടാക്കിയത് ഫോര്‍ട്രാനായിരുന്നു . ഇന്നും ഏറെ പ്രചാരമുള്ള ഒരു കമ്പ്യൂട്ടര്‍ ഭാഷയായി ഫോര്‍ട്രാന്‍ തുടരുന്നു. ALGOL കമ്പ്യൂട്ടര്‍ ഭാഷയുടെ വികസനത്തിലും ബാക്കസ് പങ്ക് വഹിച്ചു. മെച്ചപ്പെട്ട പ്രോഗ്രാമിംഗ് രീതികള്‍ വികസിപ്പിക്കാനായി ബാക്കസ് കണ്ടെത്തിയതാണ് [[ഫംഗ്ഷണല്‍ പ്രോഗ്രാമിംഗ്]].
