ഭൂമദ്ധ്യരേഖയ്ക്ക്‌ 23 ഡിഗ്രി 26 മിനിട്ട്‌ 16 സെക്കന്റ്‌ തെക്കു കൂടി (23° 26' 16" S)കടന്നുപോകുന്ന അക്ഷാംശരേഖയാണ്‌ ദക്ഷിണായനരേഖ. ദക്ഷിണായനകാലത്ത്‌ അവസാനദിവസം സൂര്യൻ ദക്ഷിണായനരേഖയ്ക്ക്‌ നേരെ മുകളിൽ എത്തുന്നു. ഇത്തരത്തിൽ സൂര്യൻ നേരേ മുകളിൽ എത്തുന്ന ദക്ഷിണാർദ്ധഗോളത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും തെക്കുള്ള അക്ഷാംശരേഖയാണ്‌ ദക്ഷിണായനരേഖ.
