ഏകദേശം 36 കോടി വർഷങ്ങൾക്കു മുൻപായിരുന്നു രണ്ടാമത്തെ കൂട്ട വംശനാശം സംഭവിച്ചത്. ആകെയുള്ള ജീവജാതികളിൽ 70-80 ശതമാനവും നശിച്ചു. കാലാവസ്ഥയിൽ വന്ന അതിതീവ്ര മാറ്റങ്ങളായിരുന്നു കാരണം.
