മേരി എല്ലെൻ (കോപ്ലാന്റ്), എഡിസൺ മക്കിൻലി ആമോസ് എന്നിവരുടെ മൂന്നാമത്തെ കുട്ടിയാണ് ആമോസ്. ^[11] നോർത്ത് കരോലിനയിലെ ന്യൂട്ടണിലെ ഓൾഡ് കാറ്റാവാബ ഹോസ്പിറ്റലിലാണ് അവർ ജനിച്ചത്. വാഷിംഗ്‌ടൺ, ഡി.സിയിലെ അവരുടെ ജോർജ്ജ്ടൗൺ വീട്ടിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ഒരു യാത്രയ്ക്കിടെയാണ് ആമോസ് തന്റെ മാതൃ മുത്തശ്ശിമാർക്ക് ഓരോരുത്തർക്കും സ്വന്തമായി ഒരു കിഴക്കൻ ചെറോക്കി മുത്തച്ഛൻ ഉണ്ടെന്ന് അവകാശപ്പെട്ടത്. ^[12] കുട്ടിക്കാലത്ത് അവൾ പ്രാധാന്യം നൽകിയത് അവളുടെ മുത്തച്ഛനായ കാൽവിൻ ക്ലിന്റൺ കോപ്ലാന്റ് ആയിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹം അവൾക്ക് പ്രചോദനത്തിന്റെയും മാർഗനിർദേശത്തിന്റെയും വലിയ ഉറവിടമായിരുന്നു.^[13]
