വളരെ ദരിദ്രമായ സ്ഥലങ്ങളിലും ലണ്ടനിലെ വൈറ്റ്ചാപ്പലിനു സമീപവും കൊലകൾ ചെയ്ത,മനസ്സിലാക്കൻ സാധിക്കാത്ത സീരിയൽ കില്ലറാണ്‌ ജാക്ക് ദ് റിപ്പർ.1888ൽ സീരിയൽ കില്ലിങ്ങിൽ സജീവമായിരുന്ന വ്യക്തിയെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കാനായി മാധ്യമങ്ങൾ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് തുടങ്ങിയ വാക്കാണ്‌ ജാക്ക് ദ് റിപ്പർ.ഇത് തെറ്റിദ്ധരിപ്പിക്കാൻ ഉപയോഗിച്ചതും പത്രപ്രവർത്തകൾ സംഭവത്തിന്‌ കൂടുതൽ ശ്രദ്ധ നെടുന്നതിനും പത്രത്തിന്റെ സർക്കുലേഷൻ കൂട്ടാനും ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരിക്കാം.കുറ്റപത്രത്തിനകത്തും സമകാലിക പത്രപ്രവർത്തകരും കുറ്റവാളിയെ “വൈറ്റ്ചാപ്പ്ല് കൊലയാളി”എന്നും “തുകൽ കോട്ട്ക്കാരൻ”(Leather Apron) എന്നാണ്‌ വിശേഷിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നത്[1] .

ലണ്ടനിലെ തെരുവുകളിലെ വേശ്യകളെയാണ്‌ സാധാരണയായി റിപ്പർ ആക്രമിച്ചിരുന്നത്.കഴുത്ത് മുതൽ അടിഭാഗം വരെ മുറിച്ച് ശരീരം വികൃതമാക്കുകയും ചെയ്തിരുന്നു[2].മൂന്നിലധികം കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടവരിലും ആന്തര അവയവങ്ങൾ മാറ്റിയതിൽ നിന്നും കുറ്റവാളി ശരീരശാസ്ത്ര വിദ്ഗ്ദ്ധനൊ ശസ്ത്രക്രിയാ വിദ്ഗ്ദ്ധനോ ആണെന്ന് വിലയിരുത്തുന്നു.1888 സെപ്റ്റംബർ ഒക്റ്റോബർ കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ കൊലയുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട ഊഹാപൊഹങ്ങൾ ബലപ്പെടുത്തിൻ കൊണ്ട് മാധ്യമശാഖകൾക്കും സ്ക്കോട്ട്ലാണ്ട് യാർഡിനും കത്തുകൾ ലഭിച്ചു[3].“നരകത്തിൽ നിന്ന്” എന്ന കത്ത് വൈറ്റ്ചാപ്പൽ വിജിലൻസ് കമ്മറ്റിയിലെ ജോർജ്ജ് ലസ്ക്കിന്‌ ലഭിച്ചു.അതിനോടൊപ്പം ഇരയായ ഒരു വ്യക്തിയുടെ പാതി കേടാകാത്ത ഒരു വൃക്കയും[4][5].കുറ്റവാളിയുടെ അതിഭീകരമായ കൊലപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന രീതിയും സംഭവങ്ങൾ മാധ്യമങ്ങൾ കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്ത രീതിയും ജാക്ക് ദ് റിപ്പർ എന്ന ഒരു മനുഷ്യൻ ഉണ്ടെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കാൻ കാരണമായി.
പത്രങ്ങളുടെ സമഗ്രമായ വാർത്തകളും അതിന്റെ വ്യാപനവും ആഗോളതലത്തിൽ റിപ്പറിന്റെ കുപ്രശസ്തിക്ക്‌ കാരണമായി.1891 വരെ വൈറ്റ്ചാപ്പലിൽ നടന്ന 11 അതിദാരുണമായ മരണങ്ങൾ 1888ൽ നടന്ന മരണങ്ങളുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതിൽ പോലീസ്‌ പരാജയപ്പെട്ടു.1888ൽ 31 ഓഗസ്റ്റ്‌ മുതൽ നവംബർ 9 വരെ നടന്ന 5 ഇരകൾ:മേരി അന്ന നിക്കോളസ്‌,അന്നി ചാപ്മാൻ,എലിസബത്ത്‌ സ്റ്റ്രിഡ്‌,കാതറിൻ എഡ്ഡോവെസ്‌,മേരി ജെയ്ൻ കെല്ലി എന്നിവരെ 5 പട്ടക്കാരുടെ പൂജയടയാട(canonical five) എന്നാണ്‌ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്‌.[6] .അവർ തമ്മിൽ പലതിലും ബന്ധമുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.എന്നാൽ ഈ കൊലകൾ ചെയ്തതാരെന്ന്‌ കണ്ട്പിടിക്കപ്പെട്ടില്ല.അസാമാന്യ ചരിത്രപഠനവും നാടോറ്റികഥകളും കപടചരിത്രവും നിറഞ്ഞ ഒരു ജീവിതമായി അത് മാറി.റിപ്പർ കേസ്സിനെറ്റെ അവലോകനത്തിനേയും പഠനത്തിനേയും റിപ്പെറോളജി എന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്നു.ഇന്ന് ആയിരത്തിലധികം സിദ്ധാന്തങ്ങൾ റിപ്പറിന്റെ വ്യക്തിത്വമായി നിലവിലുണ്ട്.ഈ കൊലകൾ പല ഫിക്ഷൻ കഥകൾക്കും കാരണമായിട്ടുണ്ട്.
