കാൾ ക്രൗസ് (ഏപ്രിൽ 28, 1874 - ജൂൺ 12, 1936)[1] ഒരു ഓസ്ട്രിയൻ എഴുത്തുകാരനും പത്രപ്രവർത്തകനുമായിരുന്നു. ഒരു വിമർശകൻ, ഉപന്യാസക്കാരൻ, അഫോറിസ്റ്റ്, നാടകകൃത്ത്, കവി, ആക്ഷേപ ഹാസ്യകഥാകൃത്ത് എന്നീ രംഗങ്ങളിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ജർമൻ സംസ്കാരം, ജർമൻ- ഓസ്ട്രിയൻ രാഷ്ട്രീയം എന്നീ മേഖലകളിൽ അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ ആക്ഷേപഹാസ്യത്തെ സംവിധാനം ചെയ്തിരുന്നു. ഓസ്ട്രിയൻ എഴുത്തുകാരൻ സ്റ്റീഫൻ സുവീഗ് ഒരിക്കൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ "the master of venomous ridicule" (der Meister des giftigen Spotts) എന്നാണ് വിളിച്ചിരുന്നത്.[2] മൂന്നു തവണ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് സാഹിത്യത്തിനുള്ള നോബൽ സമ്മാനം ലഭിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. ആദ്യകാലം

ഓസ്ട്രിയൻ-ഹംഗറി (ഇപ്പോൾ ചെക്ക് റിപ്പബ്ലിക്ക്) ജിസിനടുത്തുള്ള ഒരു ധനിക യഹൂദകുടുംബത്തിലെ പേപ്പർ നിർമ്മാതാവായ ജേക്കബ് ക്രൗസ്, അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഭാര്യ ഏണസ്റ്റൈൻ എന്നിവർക്ക് കാൾ ക്രൗസ് ജനിച്ചു. 1877- ൽ കുടുംബം വിയന്നയിലേക്ക് താമസം മാറി. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അമ്മ 1891- ൽ മരണമടഞ്ഞു. 1892- ൽ വിയന്ന സർവകലാശാലയിൽ നിയമ വിദ്യാർത്ഥിയായി ഇദ്ദേഹം ചേർന്നു. അതേ വർഷം ഏപ്രിൽ മാസത്തിൽ അദ്ദേഹം വെനീർ ലിറ്ററൂററുറ്റിങ് (Wiener Literaturzeitung) എന്ന പ്രബന്ധത്തിൽ ഗെനാർട്ട് ഹാപ്റ്റ്മാന്റെ ' ദ വെവർസിന്റെ' വിമർശനത്തോടെ സംഭാവന നൽകാൻ തുടങ്ങി. അക്കാലത്ത്, ഒരു ചെറിയ തിയറ്ററിലെ നടനെന്ന നിലയിൽ അദ്ദേഹം പരാജയപ്പെട്ടു. 1894-ൽ അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ പഠനമേഖലയെ തത്ത്വചിന്തയിലേക്കും ജർമ്മൻ സാഹിത്യത്തിലേക്കും മാറ്റി. 1896-ൽ അദ്ദേഹം പഠനം നിർത്തി. പീറ്റർ ആൾട്ടൻബർഗുമായി സൗഹൃദം ഈ സമയത്ത് ആരംഭിച്ചു.
