രണ്ട് ഹള്ളുകളോടുകൂടിയ തരം ജലയാനങ്ങൾ പൊതുവെ കാറ്റമരൻ എന്ന പേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു (/ˌkætəməˈræn/) (ചുരുക്കിപ്പറയുമ്പോൾ "cat" എന്ന് പറയാറുണ്ട്). സമാന്തരമായ രണ്ട് ബോട്ടുകൾ ചേർത്തുകൊണ്ടുള്ള ഒരു യാനമെന്ന് ഇതിനെ വിശദീകരിക്കാം. ഇതുകാരണം ഇതിലെ യാത്ര സാധാരണ ബോട്ടുയാത്രയേക്കാൾ സുഖകരമാണ്. ഓളങ്ങൾ കാറ്റമരനെ താരതമ്യേന കുറച്ചുമാത്രമേ സ്വാധീനിക്കുന്നുള്ളൂ.
ഓസ്ട്രോനേഷ്യൻ ജനതയാണ് കാറ്റമരൻ ആദ്യമായി രൂപപ്പെടുത്തിയത്.[1] തമിഴ് പദമായ കട്ടമരം (ചങ്ങാടം) എന്ന പദത്തിൽ നിന്നാണ് ഈ നാമം രൂപപ്പെടുന്നതെങ്കിലും ഇന്ന് കാറ്റമരൻ എന്നത് ഇത്തരം യാനങ്ങളെ മാത്രമാണ് സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്.[2][3][4][5][6]
