This page is to discuss translations required for Module:Convert which is used to implement Template:Convert. It is helpful for me to have this page as a central location for discussion, so please discuss any issues here, or add a new section.

Information on what is needed to adapt the module is available at the transwiki guide and the translate page that it links to.

Convert/text തിരുത്തുക

I have added the translation_table. Please check en:Template:Convert/Transwiki guide/translate#Convert/text for more that is needed. You may like to edit the convert/text module, or describe what is needed here. Johnuniq (സംവാദം) 10:10, 4 ഏപ്രിൽ 2014 (UTC)

Categories തിരുത്തുക

At enwiki, one of the following error tracking categories is added to any article where invalid input is provided to the convert template:

  • Category:Convert invalid units
  • Category:Convert invalid options

However, two categories are not needed—one category is sufficient and is easier. What name should be used for one error category? Or, if two categories are wanted, what are the two names?

OK, I have fixed that. Do you want to create that category page? Normally it would be set up as a hidden category. If you click the red link, you will see that there are currently two pages with a problem (which we will fix later). Johnuniq (സംവാദം) 11:11, 12 ഏപ്രിൽ 2014 (UTC)

Ranges തിരുത്തുക

Searching convert/text for "range_types" shows some text where translations are needed. If wanted, edit the module, or add the required text here (add the text on each of the following lines). Some of these may not be used. The last is rare, but can be used as in "from 1 to about 5 meters", in other words, the 5 is an approximate value. Johnuniq (സംവാദം) 08:08, 10 ഏപ്രിൽ 2014 (UTC)

  • and =
  • or =
  • by =
  • to =
  • to about =
in Malayalam, the "and" is used a little different. if there are A, B & C.. the and(ഉം) is used as - Aഉം Bഉം Cഉം. It comes like this.
OR(ഓ) - A or B -> A-ഓ B-ഓ...
by - let me think...
to -> 1 to 2 -> 1 തൊട്ട് 2
to about -> from 1 to about 5 meters -> ഏകദേശം 1 മുതൽ 5 മീറ്റർ(meter)

I had a quick look in those file you mentioned, but it seemed too complex to make come changes.. I thought I will make smaller changes and test, but proper test cases even I couldn't find. So I left it in between and forgot.--:- എന്ന് - അരയശ്ശേരിൽ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യപ്പണിക്കർ മനു 04:36, 12 ഏപ്രിൽ 2014 (UTC)

I have put that in convert/text. Using "to" is reasonably common, but the others are rare—there may be no "and" or "or" used at this wiki. Therefore it is not worth worrying too much about whether the en expressions can be directly translated to suitable ml text. Following are some examples:
  • {{convert|5|and|8|m}} → 5 and 8 metres (16 and 26 ft)
  • {{convert|5|or|8|m}} → 5 or 8 metres (16 or 26 ft)
  • {{convert|5|by|8|m}} → 5 by 8 metres (16 by 26 ft)
  • {{convert|5|x|8|m}} → 5 by 8 metres (16 ft × 26 ft)
  • {{convert|5|xx|8|m}} → 5 × 8 metres (16 × 26 ft)
  • {{convert|5|*|8|m}} → 5×8 metres (16×26 ft)
  • {{convert|5|to|8|m}} → 5 to 8 metres (16 to 26 ft)
  • {{convert|5|തൊട്ട്|8|m}} → 5 തൊട്ട്[convert: unknown unit]
  • {{convert|5|to about|8|m}} → 5 to about 8 metres (16 to about 26 ft)
The "5 by 8" refers to something like a room which is 5 meters wide and 8 meters long. The "x" and "xx" and "*" are variations. If something needs to be changed, please let me know (or do the edit yourself). Johnuniq (സംവാദം) 11:21, 12 ഏപ്രിൽ 2014 (UTC)
By the way, guwiki uses a multiply sign for "by", as shown for "xx" above; see examples at gu:User:Johnuniq/translate#Ranges. Johnuniq (സംവാദം) 11:52, 12 ഏപ്രിൽ 2014 (UTC)

SI prefixes തിരുത്തുക

Prefixes are used so a unit only needs to be defined once. For example, at enwiki the unit code g (gram) is defined, and that automatically allows units like kg (kilogram) and mg (milligram) to be used in conversions. A translation is needed for each symbol and name. Any blank entries will use the en symbol or name. I will add these to Module:Convert/text but will keep the original values so converts copied from enwiki continue to work. Johnuniq (സംവാദം) 08:08, 10 ഏപ്രിൽ 2014 (UTC)

I put the SI prefixes into convert/text. Please check the above which shows examples of the resulting output with all possible prefixes. I did not bother setting the output unit, so they are using the default output which is not desirable for many of them, but that can be ignored. Is this correct as far as the SI prefixes go? When we fix the units, they will appear correctly in the above. Johnuniq (സംവാദം) 11:30, 12 ഏപ്രിൽ 2014 (UTC)
