ഒദോ-മോർത്ത് (താഴ്വാരത്തെ ജനങ്ങൾ) എന്നതിൽ നിന്നാണ് ഈ വാക്കുണ്ടായത്. മോർത് എന്നത് മർത്യ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ മർത്തിയ എന്ന ഇറാനിയൻ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ സംസ്കൃതവാക്കിൽ നിന്നുണ്ടായതാകാം. This is supported by a document dated 1557, in which the Udmurts are referred to as lugovye lyudi 'meadow people', alongside the traditional Russian name otyaki .

റഷ്യയിലെ ഉദ്മുർതിയായിലാണ് കൂടുതൽ ഉദ്മുർതുകളും താമസിക്കുന്നത്. എന്നാൽ ബഷ്കോർട്ടോസ്ഥാൻ, ടാർട്ടാർസ്ഥാൻ തുടങ്ങിയസ്ഥലങ്ങളിലും ഇവർ ജീവിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ഇവരുടെ എണ്ണം കുറഞ്ഞുവരുന്നതായി അടുത്തു നടന്ന കണക്കെടുപ്പുകൾ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.

ഉറാലിക്ക് കുടുംബത്തിൽപ്പെട്ട ഒരു ഭാഷയാണ് ഉദ്മുർതുകൾ സംസാരിക്കുന്നത്.
ഉദ്മുർതുകൾക്ക് അവരുടെ സ്വന്തമായി ദൊർവൈഷി എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു ഇതിഹാസമുണ്ട്.[5]
