ഉത്തർപ്രദേശിലെ ലഹർപൂരിൽ ഒരു ഹിന്ദു അഗർവാൾ[1][2][3][4] ഖേത്രി [5][6][7] അല്ലെങ്കിൽ കയസ്ഥ,[8][9] കുടുംബത്തിൽ രാജാ തോഡർ മാൾ ജനിച്ചു. മുഗൾ രാജാവായ അക്ബറിന്റെ രാജ് സദസ്സിലെ ധനകാര്യ മന്ത്രിയായിരുന്നു രാജാ തോഡർ മാൾ[10][11] .

വളരെ ചെറുപ്പമായിരുന്നപ്പോൾ തന്നെ തോഡർ മാളിന്റെ അച്ഛൻ മരിച്ചു. എഴുത്തുകാരനായി തുടങ്ങിയ തോഡർമാൾ ഇന്നീട് പതുകെ അഫ്ഗാൻ രാജാവ് ഷേർ ഷഹ് സൂരിയുടെ കൊട്ടാരമംഗമായി പഞ്ചാബിൽ റോഹ്താസ് കോട്ട നിർമ്മിച്ച് ഘക്കർമാരെയും മുഗളന്മാരെയും പ്രധിരോധിക്കാൻ നിയോഗിച്ചു[12] . [13][14] പാഷ്തൂണുകളും [15][16][17]. അക്ബറിന്റെ കീഴിൽ ആഗ്രയുടെ മേൽനോട്ടം ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിനായിരുന്നു.പിന്നീട് ഗുജറാത്തിന്റെ അധികാരിയായി. തോഡർ മാളിന്റെ സംഭാവനകൾ ഇന്നും പ്രശംസനീയമാണ്‌.അക്ബറിന്റെ മുഗൾ സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിൽ ആദ്യമായി റവന്യു നയം നടപ്പിലാക്കിയത് ഇദ്ദേഹമാണ്‌. ഭാഗവത പുരാണം പേർഷ്യൻ ഭാഷയിലേക്ക് ഇദ്ദേഹം തർജ്ജ്മ ചെയ്തു.ഉത്തർപ്രദേശിൽ സീതാപൂർ ജില്ലയിൽ ലഹർപൂരിൽ കൊട്ടരം ഇദ്ദേഹം പണികഴിപ്പിച്ചു. ബിവെരിഡ്ജ് രേഖകളിൽ തോദർമാൾ അക്ബറിനെ വിട്ട് ഹരിദ്വാരിൽ പോയതായി കാണുന്നു. അക്ബർ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‌ ഇങ്ങനെ കത്തെഴുതി.“ലോകത്തിനു വേണ്ടി നല്ലത് പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നത് തീർഥാടനത്തേക്കൾ നല്ലതാണ്‌.”

1589ൽ അദ്ദേഹം അന്തരിച്ചു.
