To depict Salinger's appearance at one time of his life. This is the most commonly used image of him even though it is over half a century old. He was reclusive and is believed to have posed for no other publicly distributed pictures after this date, and tried to suppress these (see here: "He told the editors of Saturday Review that he was 'good and sick' of seeing his photograph on the dust jacket of 'The Catcher in the Rye' and demanded that it be removed from subsequent editions."), assiduously avoiding the public eye
