The grave was designed by Dutch architect Louis Hasselriis in - as it says on the back of the grave in Roman numerals - MDCCCIC, which seems to be an incorrect (albeit shorter) rendition of the year 1899. Engraved on the three sides of the tombstone is Heine's poem Wo? (Where?). It says in English translation:

Buried by a stranger's hand ? Or upon the well-loved beaches, Covered by the friendly sand?
