[[ഇരുമ്പ്|ഇരുമ്പിന്റെ]] കണ്ടുപിടുത്തം വീണ്ടും വളരെക്കാലം കഴിഞ്ഞാണ്‌ സംഭവിക്കുന്നത്‌. ഇരുമ്പിന്റെ അയിര്‌ ഭൗമോപരിതലത്തിൽ ലഭ്യമല്ലാത്തതും അതിനെ ശുദ്ധീകരിച്ചെടുക്കുന്നതും വിഷമം പിടിച്ചതാകയാലുമായിരിക്കണം അതിന്‌ താമസം ഉണ്ടായത്‌. എന്നാൽ ഒരിക്കൽ പ്രചാരത്തിലായതോടെ അതിന്റെ ഗുണങ്ങൾ മൂലം വെങ്കലായുധങ്ങളെ അപ്പാടെ പിന്നിലാക്കുകയായിരുന്നു ഇരുമ്പ്. ഈ യുഗത്തിലാണ്‌ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട പല കണ്ടു പിടുത്തങ്ങളും നടക്കുന്നത്‌. ചക്രങ്ങൾ കണ്ടെത്തിയതും മനുഷ്യ രാശിക്ക്‌ ഒരു വഴിത്തിരിവായിരുന്നു. രാഷ്ടങ്ങൾ താമസിയാതെ ശക്തി പ്രാപിക്കുകയും മറ്റു രാഷ്ടങ്ങളുടെ മേൽ ആധിപത്യത്തിനായി ശ്രമിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
