അന്നുമുതന്‍ ഇന്നുവരെ 19,20 നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകളില്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന അമേരിക്കന്‍ [[പോപ്പുലര്‍ സംഗീതം]] ഉള്പ്പെടുതിക്കുണ്ടുള്ളതാണ് ജാസ് എന്ന് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. പടിഞ്ഞാറന്‍ അമേരിക്കയില്‍ നിന്നുമാണ് 1915ല്‍ ജാസ് എന്ന വാക്കുണ്ടായത് എന്നും പറയുന്നു.

1987 ല്‍ അമേരിക്കന്‍ ഹൌസ് ഓഫ് റപ്രസന്‍ടെടീവേസ്ഉം, [[സെനറ്റ്|സെനറ്റും]] ഇപ്രകാരം പാസാക്കി: "..ജാസിനെ അമേരിക്കയുടെ അപൂര്‍വവും മൂല്യവുമുള്ള നിധിയായി ഇതോടെ പ്രക്യാപിക്കുന്നു. ഇത് നിലനിര്‍ത്താനും, മനസ്സിലാക്കാനും, പ്രചരിപ്പിക്കുവാനും നാം നമ്മുടെ പ്രത്യേക ശ്രദ്ധയും (attention ), പിന്‍താങ്ങലും (support), സ്രോതസ്സുകളും(resources) ഉപയോഗപ്പെടുത്തണം.."
