ഹസാരകള്‍ അഫ്ഘാനിസ്ഥാനിലെ മൂന്നാമത്തെ വലിയ ജനവിഭാഗമാണ്‌. അഫ്ഘാനിസ്ഥാനിലെ ജനസംഖ്യയുടെ പത്തുശതമാനത്തോളം വരുന്ന ഇവര്‍ [[ഷിയ]] മുസ്ലീങ്ങളാണ്‌. മാത്രമല്ല ഇവര്‍ക്ക് ഇറാനിലേയും ഇറാഖിലേയും സ്വവിഭാഗീയരുമായി അടുത്ത ബന്ധങ്ങളുമുണ്ട്. ഹസാരജതിന്റെ വടക്കുകിഴക്കു ഭാഗത്ത് ഇമാമി ഹസാരകളില്‍ (ഷിയകള്‍) നിന്നും വേറിട്ട് ഇസ്മാഈലി ഹസാരകളും വസിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. പാകിസ്താനിലെ [[ക്വെത്ത]] മേഖലയിലും ഇറാനിലും ഹസാരകളെ കണ്ടുവരുന്നുണ്ട്. ഇവരില്‍ കൂടുതലും അഭയാര്‍ത്ഥികളായി എത്തിയവരാണ്‌.

പണ്ട്, അഫ്ഘാനിസ്ഥാനിലെ ഹസാരകള്‍ ഇന്നവര്‍ വസിക്കുന്ന പ്രദേശത്തിന്‌ കിഴക്കും തെക്കുമുള്ള കൂടുതല്‍ മേഖലകളില്‍ ആധിപത്യം പുലര്‍ത്തിയിരുന്നു. 1890-93 കാലത്തെ ഒരു യുദ്ധത്തില്‍ [[അമീര്‍ അബ്ദ് അല്‍ റഹ്മാന്‍|അമീര്‍ അബ്ദ് അല്‍ റഹ്മാന്റെ]] നേതൃത്വത്തിലുള്ള [[പഷ്തൂണ്‍|പഷ്തൂണുകള്‍]] ഇവരെ പരാജയപ്പെടുത്തുകയും ഹസാരകള്‍ക്ക് കൂടുതല്‍ ഉയര്‍ന്ന പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലേക്ക്ക് പലായനം ചെയ്യേണ്ടതായും വന്നു<ref name=afghans2/>.
