പട്ടണത്തില്‍ സംഗീതരംഗത്ത് ഉപജീവനമാര്‍ഗം തേടിയാണ് ബ്രാംസിന്റെ പിതാവ് ജൊഹാന്‍ ജേക്കബ് ബ്രാംസ് ഹാംബര്‍ഗ്ഗിലെത്തിയത്. പല സംഗീതോപകരണങ്ങളിലും വൈദഗ്ധ്യമുണ്ടായിരുന്ന അദ്ദേഹം, കുഴല്‍ ഇരട്ട ബാസ് എന്നിവയുടെ വാദകനായിട്ടണ് ഏറെയും തൊഴില്‍ കിട്ടിയത്. അവിവാഹിതയായിരുന്നെങ്കിലും തന്നേക്കാള്‍ 17 വയസ്സ് മൂപ്പുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഹെന്‍‌റീക്കാന്‍ ക്രിസ്റ്റേന്‍ നിസ്സനെ അദ്ദേഹം വിവാഹം കഴിച്ചു. ആദ്യം പട്ടണത്തിലെ തുറമുഖത്തിനടുത്ത് താമസിച്ച അവര്‍ ആറുമാസത്തിനു ശേഷം ഹാംബര്‍ഗ്ഗിന്റെ വടക്കന്‍ അതിര്‍ത്തിയിലുള്ള ഡാംടോര്‍വാളിലേക്ക് താമസം മാറ്റി.

Johann Jakob gave his son his first musical training. He studied piano from the age of seven with Otto Friedrich Willibald Cossel. It is a long-told tale that Brahms was forced in his early teens to play the piano in bars that doubled as brothels; recently Brahms scholar Kurt Hoffman has suggested that this legend is false.
