2009ൽ പാകിസ്താനെതിരായ ടെസ്റ്റ് പരമ്പരയിലാണ് ഏയ്ഞ്ചലോ മാത്യൂസ് അരങ്ങേറ്റം കുറിച്ചത്. പാകിസ്താൻ താരങ്ങളായ [[സയീദ് അജ്മൽ|സയീദ് അജ്മലിന്റെയും]] മുഹമ്മദ് ആമിറിന്റെയും അരങ്ങേറ്റം ഈ പരമ്പരയിലായിരുന്നു. പരമ്പരയിലെ മൂന്നാം ടെസ്റ്റ് മത്സരത്തിൽ തന്റെ ആദ്യ അർധ സെഞ്ച്വറി നേടി. 2011ൽ കൊളംബോയിൽ വെച്ച് ഓസ്ട്രേലിയയ്ക്കെതിരെയാണ് തന്റെ ആദ്യ സെഞ്ച്വറി മാത്യൂസ് നേടിയത്. ഓസ്ട്രേലിയ, ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്ക, ഇന്ത്യ എന്നീ ടീമുകൾക്കെതിരെ ശരാശരിയിലും താഴെയുള്ള പ്രകടനമാണ് മാത്യൂസ് കാഴ്ചവെച്ചിട്ടുള്ളത്. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ നാല് സെഞ്ച്വറികളിൽ രണ്ടും മികച്ച പേസ് ബൗളർമാരായ ജയിംസ് ആന്റേഴ്സണും സ്റ്റുവർട്ട് ബ്രോഡ് എന്നിവരടങ്ങയ ഇംഗ്ലണ്ട് ടീമിനെതിരായി ആയിരുന്നു. 13 മത്സരങ്ങളിൽ ക്യാപ്റ്റനായി 86.62 ശരാശരി നേടി.
