ആദ്യത്തെ ഉന്നത തല കമ്പ്യൂട്ടർ ഭാഷയായ [[ഫോർട്രാൻ]] വികസിപ്പിച്ച [[ഐ.ബി.എം.]] സംഘത്തിന്റെ തലവനായിരുന്നു '''ജോൺ വാർണർ ബാക്കസ്''' (ജനനം: [[ഡിസംബർ 3]] 1924 മരണം [[മാർച്ച് 17]] 2007). IBM 704 കമ്പ്യൂട്ടറിന് വേണ്ടിയാണ് ബാക്കസും സംഘവും ഫോർട്രാൻ വികസിപ്പിച്ചത്. കമ്പ്യൂട്ടറുകൾക്ക് ശാസ്ത്ര ഗവേഷണ രംഗത്ത് പ്രധാന്യമുണ്ടാക്കിയത് ഫോർട്രാനായിരുന്നു . ഇന്നും ഏറെ പ്രചാരമുള്ള ഒരു കമ്പ്യൂട്ടർ ഭാഷയായി ഫോർട്രാൻ തുടരുന്നു. ALGOL കമ്പ്യൂട്ടർ ഭാഷയുടെ വികസനത്തിലും ബാക്കസ് പങ്ക് വഹിച്ചു. മെച്ചപ്പെട്ട പ്രോഗ്രാമിംഗ് രീതികൾ വികസിപ്പിക്കാനായി ബാക്കസ് കണ്ടെത്തിയതാണ് [[ഫംഗ്ഷണൽ പ്രോഗ്രാമിംഗ്]].
