1814-ൽ ഫ്രാൻസിനെ കീഴടക്കി കോളനി വാഴ്ച്ച ആരംഭിച്ച ബ്രിട്ടനിൽ നിന്നും 1968-ൽ മൗരീഷ്യസ് സ്വതംന്ത്രമായി. ഇതൊരു ജനാധിപത്യ രാഷ്ട്രമാണ്. ആംഗലേയമാണ് ഔദ്യോഗിക ഭാഷയെങ്കിലും, മൗരീഷ്യൻ ക്രിയൊലെ, ഫ്രെഞ്ച് എന്നിവയും പ്രധാനമായും സംസാരിച്ചുവരുന്നു. ഇന്ത്യൻ വംശജരുടെ സാന്നിധ്യംകൊണ്ടു ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണീ രാജ്യം. ജനസംഖ്യയിൽ എഴുപതു ശതമാനത്തോളം ഇന്ത്യൻ വംശജരാണ്. അമ്പതു ശതമാനത്തിലേറെ ജനങ്ങൾ [[ഹിന്ദുമതം|ഹിന്ദുമത]] വിശ്വാസികളുമാണ്.
== നിരുക്തം ==
അറേബ്യൻ സഞ്ചരികളാണ് ഈ ദീപിൽ ആദ്യം എത്തിച്ചേർന്നത്. അവർ ഇതിനെ ദിനാ അരൊബി എന്നുവിളിച്ചു. 1507-ൽ പറങ്കി നാവികർ ഇവിടെ വന്നു തൂടങ്ങി. പഴയ പറങ്കി മാപ്പുകളിൽ "ക്രിനെ" എന്ന പേരിൽ ഇതിനെ കാണിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. പറക്കനാവാത്ത "ദൊദൊ" എന്ന പക്ഷിയുടെ സാന്നിധ്യം കൊണ്ടാണിതെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു. പിന്നീടെത്തിയ പറങ്കി നാവികൻ, ദോം പെദ്രൊ മാസ്കാരെൻഹസ്, ഈ ദ്വീപസമൂഹങ്ങളെ മാസ്കാരെൻസ് എന്നു വിളിച്ചു. 1598-ൽ നാവിക സേനാപതി വൈബ്രാൻഡ് വാൻ വാർവിക്കിന്റെ നേതൃതത്തിൽ ഡച്ച് പടവ്യൂഹം "ഗ്രാൻഡ് തുറമുഖത്ത്" എത്തിച്ചേരുകയും ദ്വീപിനെ മൗറീഷ്യസ് നാമകരണം ചെയ്യുകയും ചെയ്തു. 1715-ൽ ചുറ്റുമുള്ള ദ്വീപുകൾ കയ്യടക്കിയിരുന്ന ഫ്രാൻസ് മൗറീഷ്യസിനേയും സ്വന്തമാക്കി ഐലെ ദെ ഫ്രാൻസ് നാമകരണം ചെയ്തു. 1814-ൽ ഫ്രാൻസിനെ കീഴടക്കി വെള്ളക്കാർ ദ്വീപിനെ സ്വന്തമാക്കി മൗറീഷ്യസ് എന്നു നാമകരണം ചെയ്തു.

== ഭൂമിശാസ്ത്രം ==
80-ലക്ഷം വർഷങ്ങൾക്കുമുമ്പുണ്ടായ അഗ്നിപർവ്വതസ്പോടനം വഴിയാണ് മൗറീഷ്യസ് ദ്വീപുകൾ ഉണ്ടായത്. മാസ്കെരേൻ ദ്വീപുകളുടെ ഭാഗമാണ് മൗറീഷ്യസ്. ഇപ്പോൾ സജീവമായ ഒരു അഗ്നിപർവ്വതവുമില്ല. കഴിഞ്ഞ 10000 വർഷ്ത്തിനിടക്ക് ഒരു അഗ്നിപർവ്വതസ്പോടനവും രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടില്ല. സമുദ്രനിരപ്പിൽ നിന്ന് 300 മുതൽ 800 മീറ്റർ വരെ ഉയരമുള്ള, വിട്ടു വിട്ടു കിടക്കുന്ന മലനിരകളാൽ ചുറ്റപെട്ടതാണ് മൗറീഷ്യസ്. തീരത്തുനിന്നും ഉള്ളിലെ സമതലത്തിലേക്കെത്തുമ്പോൾ ഉയരം 670 മീറ്റർ വരെയാകുന്നു. ഏറ്റവും ഉയരം കൂടിയ ഭാഗം തെക്കുപടിഞ്ഞാറുള്ള പിറ്റൊൻ ദെ ല പെറ്റിറ്റ് രിവിരെ നോയിരാണ്(828 മീറ്റർ). പുഴകളാലും നദികളാലും ദ്വീപ് സമൃദ്ധമാണ്, പർവ്വതാഗ്നിപ്രവാഹം മൂലമുണ്ടായ വിടവുകളിലൂടെയാണ് ഇവ പ്രധാനമായും വരുന്നത്.

ഉഷ്‌ണമേഖലയിലുള്ള കാലാവസ്ഥയാണ് കാടുകളാലും മരങ്ങളാലും ചുറ്റപ്പെട്ട തീരപ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ അനുഭവപ്പെടുന്നത്. കാലികമായ ചക്രവാതം ജന്തു-സസ്യജാലങ്ങൾക്ക് വിനാശകരമാകുമെങ്കിലും, അവ ദ്രുതഗതിയിൽ അതിനെ തരണം ചെയ്യാറുണ്ട്. ലോകത്തിൽ എറ്റവും ശുദ്ധമായ വായുവാണ് മൗറീഷ്യസിലേത്. ലോകാരോഗ്യസംഘടന പ്രസിദ്ധികരിച്ച വായു ഗുണനിലവാര സുചികയിൽ മൗറീഷ്യസിന് രണ്ടാം സ്ഥാനമാണുള്ളത്.
ദക്ഷിണായനരേഖയിൽ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നതുകൊണ്ട്, ഉഷ്‌ണമേഖലയിലെ കാലവസ്ഥയാണ്. പ്രധാനമായും രണ്ടു ഋതുക്കൾ: നവംബർ മുതൽ എപ്രിൽ വരെ നീണ്ടുനിൽക്കുന്ന ഈർപ്പമുള്ള ഉഷ്‌ണകാലം, ഈ സമയത്തെ ശരാശരി താപനില 24.7° ആണ്, ജുൺ മുതൽ സെപ്ത്ംബർ വരെ ഉണങ്ങി വരണ്ടു തണുപ്പുള്ള ശൈത്യവും, ഈ സമയത്തെ ശരാശരി താപനില 20.4° ആണ്. എറ്റവും ചൂടൂള്ള സമയം ജനുവരിയും ഫബ്രുവരിയുമാണ്, ശരാശരി, പകലത്തെ ഉയർന്ന താപനില 29.2°. എറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ തണുപ്പ് അനുഭവപ്പെടുന്നത് ജൂലായ്-ഓഗസ്റ്റ് മാസങ്ങളിലാണ്, ശരാശരി, രാത്രിയിലെ എറ്റവും എറ്റവും കുറഞ്ഞ താപനില 16.4°. വർഷത്തിൽ തീരങ്ങളിൽ 900മിമീ-ഉം സമതലങ്ങളിൽ 1500മിമീ-ഉം മഴ ലഭിക്കാറുണ്ട്. മഴ പ്രധാനമായും ലഭിക്കുന്നതു വേനൽക്കാലത്താണ്.
