പേര് സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നത് പോലെ സൂര്യപ്രകാശം അധികം എത്താത്ത, നിത്യഹരിത വനങ്ങളിലെ കാട്ടരുവിയോരങ്ങളിലാണ് നിഴൽത്തുമ്പികളെ കാണാറുള്ളത്. ഒഴുക്ക് കുറഞ്ഞ കുഞ്ഞരുവികളാണ് ഇവയുടെ പ്രജനനകേന്ദ്രങ്ങൾ. മിക്ക സ്പീഷിസുകളും ചെറിയ ഒരുപ്രദേശത്തുമാത്രം കാണപ്പെടുന്ന രീതിയിൽ ആണ് ഉള്ളത്. മറ്റ് തുമ്പികളിൽ നിന്ന് വ്യത്യസ്തമായി ഇവ തങ്ങളുടെ പ്രജനനകേന്ദ്രങ്ങൾ വിട്ട് അധിക ദൂരം സഞ്ചരിക്കാറില്ല. അതിനാൽത്തന്നെ പല സ്പീഷിസുകളെയും ഇനിയും കണ്ടുപിടിക്കാൻ ഉണ്ടാവാം.<ref name="Paulson2009">{{Cite book|url=http://books.google.com/books?id=wnX1nJSmFfAC&pg=PA184|title=Dragonflies and Damselflies of the West|last=Paulson, Dennis|publisher=Princeton University Press|year=2009|isbn=1-4008-3294-2|page=184}}</ref>
