കേരളത്തിലെ സമതല പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലും മലനിരകളിലുമെല്ലാം വളരെ സാധാരണമാണ് ഈ തുമ്പി. നെൽപ്പാടങ്ങൾ, വലിയ കുളങ്ങൾ, ചതുപ്പ് നിലങ്ങൾ എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലൊക്കെ ഇവയുടെ വലിയ കൂട്ടങ്ങളെ കാണാം. ഇളം നീലയും തവിട്ടു നിറവുമുള്ള ഉരസ്സിൽ കറുത്ത പൊട്ടുകളും ഉരസ്സിന് മുകൾ ഭാഗത്ത് ചൂണ്ടയുടെ ആകൃതിയിൽ തിളങ്ങുന്ന പച്ച നിറത്തിലുള്ള വരയുമുണ്ട്. പ്രായപൂർത്തിയാകാത്ത ആൺതുമ്പികൾ പെൺതുമ്പികളെപ്പോലെ തവിട്ടു നിറത്തിലാണ് കാണപ്പെടുന്നത്.<ref name=Fraser1>{{cite book|author=C FC Lt.
