ലൂയി പതിനാറാമൻ ആയിരുന്നു ഫ്രഞ്ച് വിപ്ലവം നടക്കുമ്പോഴുള്ള രാജാവ്. 1789 ജൂൺ 20 ഇന് നടന്ന ടെന്നീസ് കോർട്ട് പ്രതിജ്ഞ ഫ്രഞ്ച് വിപ്ലവത്തിലെ ഒരു പ്രധാന സംഭവമായിരുന്നു. 1789 ജൂലൈ 14 ഇന് 1000 കണക്കിന് ആളുകൾ ചേർന്ന് ഫ്രാൻസിലെ പ്രധാന ജയിലായിരുന്ന ബാസ്റ്റൈറ്റൈൽ കോട്ട തകർത്തതോടെയാണ് വിപ്ലവം ആരംഭിച്ചത് . 1789 - ൽ മനുഷ്യാവകാശ പ്രഖ്യാപനം നടന്നു . 1792 - ൽ വിപ്ലവകാരികൾ ഫ്രാൻസിനെ റിപബ്ലിക്ക് ആയി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചു. ഫ്രഞ്ച് വിപ്ലവത്തെ എതിർത്തിരുന്നവരെ വധിക്കാൻ ഉപയോഗിച്ച ഉപകരണമായിരുന്നു ഗില്ലറ്റിൻ . ഫ്രഞ്ച് വിപ്ലവത്തിൻറെ പ്രവാചകൻ എന്നറിയപ്പെട്ട ചിന്തകനാണ് റൂസ്സോ .
