ഭാരതമുൾപ്പെടെ ഏതാണ്ട് ഇരുപതോളം രാജ്യങ്ങളിൽ സുലഭമായി കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു രത്നക്കല്ലാണ്‌ '''ഓണിക്സ്''' . ഈ രത്നത്തിന്റെ ഉറവിടം ഭൂമിയിലുള്ള കാൽസിഡോണി(Chalcedony bands) പാറ അടുക്കുകളാണ് . വാസ്തവത്തിൽ രാസപരമായി ഈ രത്നം പാറ തന്നെയാണ് . സിലിക്കോൺ ഡയോക്സൈഡാണ്(SiO2) ഇതിന്റെ രാസഘടന. ഇത് തന്നെയാണ് കരിങ്കൽ പാറയുടെയും രാസഘടന . എന്നാൽ ചില പ്രത്യേക ഓക്സൈഡുകളുടെ(Oxides) സാന്നിദ്ധ്യം കാരണം ഇതിനു വളരെ വളരെ വിപുലമായ വർണ്ണ വൈവിദ്ധ്യം കൈവരുന്നു . ചുവന്ന ഓണിക്സ്(Red Onyx) , കറുത്ത ഓണിക്സ്(Black Onyx) , പച്ച ഓണിക്സ്(Green Onyx) എന്നിങ്ങനെ വിവിധ വർണ്ണങ്ങളിലായി ഓണിക്സ് ലഭ്യമാണ് .
