[[ചെമ്മീൻ|ചെമ്മീനും]] [[കൊഞ്ച്|കൊഞ്ചും]] ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന [[ഡെക്കാപോഡ]] കുടുംബത്തിൽപ്പെട്ട ഒരു ജീവിയാണ് '''ഞണ്ട്'''. ഏറിയപങ്കും ജലത്തിൽ വസിക്കുന്നവയാണ് ഞണ്ടുകൾ. ലോകത്താകമാനം ഇവയുടെ വിവിധ ജാതികൾ കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. ഏകദേശം 850 ഓളം ഇനങ്ങൾ കണ്ടെത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്<ref>{{cite journal |author=R. von Sternberg & N. Cumberlidge |year=2001 |title=On the heterotreme-thoracotreme distinction in the Eubrachyura De Saint Laurent, 1980 (Decapoda: Brachyura) |journal=[[Crustaceana]] |volume=74 |pages=321–338 |doi=10.1163/156854001300104417 |issue=4}}</ref>. ഇവയുടെ ശരീരത്തിന്റെ ബാഹ്യഭാഗം കട്ടിയേറിയ പുറന്തോടിനാൽ ആവരണം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. കൈകളുടെ അഗ്രത്തിലായി ഒറ്റനഖം ഉണ്ട്. ആൺഞണ്ടുകളിൽ കാലുകൾക്ക് പെൺഞണ്ടുകളെ അപേക്ഷിച്ച് വലിപ്പം കൂടുതലായിരിക്കും. ഉഷ്ണമേഖലാ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ ശുദ്ധജലത്തിലും ചെളികലർന്ന ജലത്തിലും വസിക്കുന്നു. ഇവയിൽ തീരെ ചെറിയ ഇനവും വലിപ്പമേറിയ ഇനവും ഉണ്ട്.
