ഇന്ത്യൻ ഉപഭൂഖണ്ടത്തിൽ ചിതറി കിടന്ന ഫ്രഞ്ച് കോളനി പ്രദേശങ്ങളെ ചേർത്ത് ഫ്രഞ്ച് ഇന്ത്യ എന്ന് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.1950ലും 1954ലും ഈ പ്രദേശങ്ങൾ ഇന്ത്യൻ യൂണിയനിൽ ലയിച്ചു.കൊറാമണ്ടൽ തീരപ്രദേശത്തെ പോണ്ടിചേരി,കാരക്കൽ,യാനം എന്നീ പ്രദേശങ്ങളും മലബാർ തീരപ്രദേശത്തെ മാഹി ബംഗാളിലെ ചാന്ദേർനഗർ എന്നീ പ്രദേശങ്ങളും ഫ്രഞ്ച് ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ഭാഗമായിരുന്നു.ഫ്രഞ്ച് ഇന്ദ്യയിലെ ധാരാളം ലോഡ്ജുകളും(വ്യാപാര സ്ഥലങ്ങൾ) ഉൽപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു.1816നു ശേഷം ഈ പ്രദേശങ്ങൾക്ക് കച്ചവടപ്രധാന്യം വരികയും ഇവ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് അധികാരത്തിൻ കീഴിൽ വരികയും ചെയ്തു.▼

1673 ഫെബ്രുവരി നാലാം തീയതി പോണ്ടിച്ചേരിയിലെ ഡാനിഷ് ലോഡ്ജിൽ ബെല്ലാഗർ ഡെ എൽ എപിൻനായ് എന്ന ഫ്രഞ്ച് ഓഫീസർ ഏറ്റെടുക്കുകയും പോണ്ടിച്ചേരിയിൽ ആദ്യമായി ഫ്രഞ്ച് അഡ്മിനിസ്ട്രേഷൻ ആരംഭിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.1674 ആദ്യത്തെ ഗവർണറായിരുന്ന ഫ്രാങ്കോയിസ് മാർട്ടിൻ ഒരു ചെറിയ മീൻ പിടുത്ത ഗ്രാമത്തിൽനിന്നും പോണ്ടിച്ചേരിയെ ഒരു തുറമുഖ നഗരം ആക്കി മാറ്റാനുള്ള പദ്ധതികൾ ആരംഭിച്ചു. ആ സമയത്തും ഫ്രഞ്ചുകാർ ഡച്ചുകാരും ഇംഗ്ലീഷുകാരും തമ്മിൽ നിരന്തരം സംഘട്ടനത്തിൽ ആയിരുന്നു.ഫ്രാൻസിലെ ഗൊൽകോണ്ട സുൽത്താൻ ഖുത്ബ്ഷാ ആന്റോൻ ഡിസ്ട്രെമ എന്ന ഫ്രഞ്ച് ഹുഗ്നോട്ട് ഭിഷഗ്വരൻ ഫ്രാൻസിന്റെ കേസ് ഫാൻസിനു അനുകൂലമാക്കി. 1693 ൽ ഡച്ചുകാർ പോണ്ടിച്ചേരി പിടിച്ചടക്കുകയും കോട്ടകളുടെ ശക്തി വർദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. 1699 സെപ്റ്റംബർ 20 ന് ഫ്രഞ്ച് ഒപ്പുവച്ച ട്രൈറ്റി ഓഫ് റൈസ്വിക്ക്({Treaty of Ryswick)}വഴി ഫ്രഞ്ചുകാർ ഈ നഗരം തിരിച്ചു പിടിച്ചു.
