പതിനാറാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിനുമുമ്പും യൂറോപ്യൻമാർക്കുശേഷവും ആഫ്രിക്ക, യൂറോപ്പ്, ഏഷ്യ എന്നിവിടങ്ങളുമായി ലോകത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് ചിന്തിച്ചിരുന്ന ക്ലാസിക്കൽ ജിയോഗ്രാഫർമാരുടെ ഭൂമിശാസ്ത്രപരമായ ചക്രവാളത്തെ വിപുലീകരിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ഏജ് ഡിസ്ക്കവറിയിൽ അമേരിക്കൻസ് എന്നു വിളിക്കപ്പെടുന്നതിന് ശേഷം ഈ പദം ആരംഭിച്ചു. ഇപ്പോൾ കൂട്ടമായി പഴയ ലോകമെന്നാണു് ഇതിനെ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത് (a.k.a. ആഫ്രോ യുറേഷ്യ).
