എ.ഡി. 1221-ൽ [[ചൈന]]യിലാണ് ആദ്യമായി ബോംബുകൾ പ്രയോഗിക്കപ്പെട്ടത്. ചൈനയിലെ ജിൻ രാജവംശത്തിലെ (1115–1234) സൈനികർ സോങ് രാജ്യത്തിലെ ഒരു നഗരത്തെ ആക്രമിക്കുന്നതിനായാണ് ബോംബ് പ്രയോഗിച്ചത്.<ref name="Connolly">{{cite book|author=Peter Connolly|title=The Hutchinson Dictionary of Ancient and Medieval Warfare|date=1 November 1998|publisher=Taylor & Francis|isbn=978-1-57958-116-9|page=356}}<!--|accessdate=29 September 2012--></ref> ഇരുമ്പുകൊണ്ടുള്ള പുറന്തോടിനുള്ളിൽ വെടിമരുന്ന് നിറച്ചുള്ള ബോംബുകൾ പതിമൂന്നാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടു മുതൽ തന്നെ ചൈനയിൽ ഉപയോഗിച്ചുതുടങ്ങിയിരുന്നു.<ref name="needham"/> 1231-ൽ ജിൻ രാജവംശവും മംഗോളിയന്മാരും തമ്മിൽ നടന്ന നാവികയുദ്ധത്തിലും ബോംബുകൾ (thunder-crash bombs) ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്നു.<ref name="needham">Needham, Joseph.
