[[കേരളം|കേരള സംസ്ഥാനത്തിലെ]] 12ആം ജില്ലയാണ് '''വയനാട്'''. [[കൽപറ്റ|കൽ‌പറ്റയാണ്]] ജില്ലയുടെ ആസ്ഥാനം. കേരളത്തിലെ പന്ത്രണ്ടാമത് ജില്ലയായി [[1980]] [[നവംബർ 1|നവംബർ ഒന്നിനാണ്]] വയനാട് ജില്ല രൂപം കൊണ്ടത്. കേരളത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും കുറവ് ജനസംഖ്യയുള്ള ജില്ലയാണിത്. [[കോഴിക്കോട് ജില്ല|കോഴിക്കോട്]] , [[കണ്ണൂർ ജില്ല|കണ്ണൂർ]] എന്നീ ജില്ലകളുടെ ഭാഗമായിരുന്ന സ്ഥലങ്ങൾ അടർത്തിയെടുത്താണ് വയനാടിനു രൂപം കൊടുത്തത്. [[കബനി|കബനി നദിയാണ്‌]] ഈ ജില്ലയിലൂടെ ഒഴുകുന്ന പ്രധാന നദി. കർണാടക, തമിഴ്നാട് സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളുമായി അതിർത്തി പങ്കിടുന്ന കേരളത്തിലെ ഏക ജില്ലയാണ് വയനാട്.
