This is a utility template used by [[Template:Taxonomy]]. The purpose is to ensure that if a taxon name at species rank or lower has an abbreviated genus name, when displayed there is no line break between the genus abbreviation and the specific name or epithet.
 
It does this by replacing the first occurrence of "<code>.&nbsp;</code>" by "<code>.&amp;nbsp;</code>", provided this occurrence begins within the first five characters. (Five because in some cases <code><nowiki>''</nowiki></code> is passed to italicize the name and it's possible – although now old-fashioned – to use two letter genus abbreviations like "Ph.")
