Efremova T.F. 2000]</ref> വടക്കുപടിഞ്ഞാറൻ ജോർജിയയിലെ സ്വനേതി മേഖലയിലാണ് ഇവർ കൂടുതലായി താമസിക്കുന്നത്. സ്വാൻ ജനത സംസാരിക്കുന്നത് സ്വാൻ ഭാഷയാണ്. ഇവരിൽ ഭൂരിഭാഗം ജനങ്ങളും ജോർജിയൻ ഭാഷയും സംസാരിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ഈ രണ്ടും ഭാഷയും കാർട്‌വേലിയൻ - സൗത്ത് കൊക്കേഷ്യൻ ഭാഷാ കുടുംബത്തിൽ ഉൾപ്പെട്ടതാണ്. 1930ന് മുൻപുള്ള സോവിയറ്റ് സെൻസസിൽ സ്വാൻ ജനതയെ വംശീയ വിഭാഗമായിട്ടാണ് ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. മുഷുവൻ എന്നാണ് സ്വാൻ ജനങ്ങൾ സ്വയം വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. പുരാതന എഴുത്തുക്കാരിൽ മിക്കവരും ഇങ്ങനെയാണ് പ്രതിപാദിച്ചിരുന്നത്.
