പണിയർ ചരിത്രം കൃഷിപ്പണിക്കാരുടെതാണ്. വയനാട്ടിലേക്ക് കേരള രാജക്കന്മാർ കൊണ്ടുവന്നതാവാം എന്നാണ് കരുതുന്നത്. ഏതാണ്ട് അടിമകളെപ്പോലെയാണ് അവർ ജീവിച്ചുവന്നത്. അടിമത്വം അവസാനിച്ചതോടെ സർക്കാർ പല സ്ഥലങ്ങളിലായി അധിവസിക്കപ്പെട്ടു.

The Paniya have historically worked as agricultural labourers. They are believed to have been brought to Wayanad by the king of [[Malabar region|Malabar]], and thereafter tilled the land as serfs.
