റോമൻ ചക്രവർത്തി ഹേഡ്രിയൻ്റെ ഭരണകാലത്ത് ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ദ്വീപിനു{{സൂചിക|൧}} കുറുകെ പണിത ഒരു പ്രതിരോധമതിലാണ് ഹേഡ്രിയൻ മതിൽ ({{lang-en|Hadrian's Wall}}, ''ഹേഡ്രിയൻസ് വോൾ''), ({{lang-la|Vallum Aelium}}). റോമൻ മതിൽ, പിക്റ്റ്സ് മതിൽ, എന്നൊക്കെ പേരുകളുണ്ട്. ക്രിസ്തുവർഷം 122-ലാണ്ൽ മതിലിൻ്റെപണിയാരംഭിച്ച ഈ മതിൽ കിഴക്ക് ന്യൂകാസിൽ നഗരത്തിൽ ടൈൻ നദിക്കരയിൽ നിന്ന് തുടങ്ങി പടിഞ്ഞാറ് [[Solway Firth|സോൾവേയ് ഉൾക്കടൽ]] വരെ പണിയാരംഭിച്ചത്നീണ്ടുകിടക്കുന്നു. ഇക്കാലത്ത്മതിലും റോമാസാമ്രാജ്യത്തിൻ്റെഅടിത്തറയും ആധിപത്യത്തിലായിരുന്നകല്ലുകൊണ്ടാണ് ബ്രിട്ടൻ,നിർമ്മിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ബ്രിട്ടാനിയഎന്നരണ്ട് പേരിലായിരുന്നുതാഴികക്കുടങ്ങളോടുകൂടി അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നത്മൈൽക്കോട്ടകൾ മതിലിൻ്റെ പാതയിൽ ഇടക്കിടെയുണ്ട്. ഇതിനുപുറമേ ഓരോ അഞ്ച് മൈൽ ഇടവിട്ട് കോട്ടകളുമുണ്ട്.<!-- From north to south the wall comprised a ditch, wall, military way and vallum (another ditch with adjoining mounds). Roman Wall, Picts' Wall, or Vallum Hadriani, was a defensive fortification in the Roman province of Britannia, begun in 122 CE during the rule of emperor Hadrian. It ran between the River Tyne and the Solway Firth. It had a stone base and a stone wall. There were milecastles with two turrets in between. There was a fort about every five miles. From north to south the wall comprised a ditch, wall, military way and vallum (another ditch with adjoining mounds). A significant portion of the wall still exists and can be followed on foot along the Hadrian's Wall Path. It is the most popular tourist attraction in Northern England and was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.[2]-->
