ഇന്ത്യന്‍ ഉപഭൂഖണ്ഡത്തിലെ വെങ്കലയുഗം ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത് ഏകദേശം ക്രി.മു 3300 ഓടെ സിന്ധൂ നദീതട സംസ്കാരത്തില്‍ ആണ്. പുരാതന സിന്ധൂ നദീതടത്തിലെ താമസക്കാരായ ഹാരപ്പര്‍ ലോഹനിര്‍മ്മിതിയില്‍ പുതിയ വിദ്യകള്‍ വികസിപ്പിച്ച് ചെമ്പ്, വെങ്കലം, ഈയം, തകരം (ടിന്‍) എന്നിവ നിര്‍മ്മിച്ചു.
സിന്ധൂനദീതട സംസ്കാരം പുഷ്കലമായത് ക്രി.മു. 2600 മുതല്‍ ക്രി.മു 1900 വരെയാണ്. ഇത് ഉപഭൂഖണ്ഡത്തില്‍ നഗര സംസ്കാരത്തിന്റെ തുടക്കം കുറിച്ചു. പുരാതന സംസ്കാരത്തില്‍ [[ഹാരപ്പ]], [[മോഹന്‍ജൊദാരോ]] തുടങ്ങിയ നഗര കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളും (ഇന്നത്തെ പാക്കിസ്ഥാനില്‍) [[ധൊലാവിര]], [[ലോഥാല്‍]] എന്നിവയും (ഇന്നത്തെ ഇന്ത്യയില്‍) ഉള്‍പ്പെട്ടു. സിന്ധൂ നദി, അതിന്റെ കൈവഴികള്‍ എന്നിവയെ കേന്ദ്രീകരിച്ചായിരുന്നു ഈ സംസ്കാരം വികസിച്ചത്.
